How to Vent a Kitchen Sink – 6 Easy Steps in 2024

Venting a kitchen sink is a widespread problem in almost every home because it prevents the pipes from clogging so it can enhance the fresh air.

Everyone needs to know how to vent a kitchen sink because it is the need of every kitchen and home. In our homes, most vents are connected to the central duct that extends vertically to the house’s roof.

But if there is a window in the way, you should set the vent horizontally for that window area. It would help if you took in mind venting a kitchen sink under the window to make sure that the duct runs on an upward slope for optimum results.

Unfortunately, most homeowners don’t know how to vent a kitchen sink that may be under a window or not. But here, we provide you with complete guidelines on venting a kitchen sink.

The kitchen sink venting is not a complex process. If you do this carefully, you can quickly vent your kitchen yourself.

What Is Plumbing Venting?

Venting is a process that carries the waste and water through the pipes from home without gurgles or fumes. This requires an air passageway behind the water. The kitchen sink vents also quickly eliminate the smell, smoke, and dirt of your kitchen through these venting pipes.

Types of the Sink Vents

True Vent

A proper vent is a vertical pipe connected to the drain line and travels from the roof, having no water running through it. If a fixture is closed to the stack on the top of the floor, then its upper part serves nicely as a vent.

Recent Pipe

This pipe is also called an auxiliary vent connected near the fixture and runs up and over the central vent. We can attach it directly behind the institution or the horizontal drain line.

Air Admittance Valve

This air admittance valve opens the air in waste drains; the gravity closes it to keep the sewer gases from escaping into the room.

How to Install a Vent Pipe for a Kitchen

The kitchen is the busiest room in the homes because we cannot live without eating, and this process is completed with the help of kitchens. Different foods and drinks are made in this room. So a lot of smell is produced in this room, and good ventilation is essential for this.

If your kitchen sink vent pipe doesn’t work correctly, it becomes too difficult to drain the water, and the lines get blocked and leave nasty smells.

So follow the following guidelines in venting the kitchen sink; you will need to have these items first in your home.

  • Hack saw
  • Drill
  • PVC sanitary tee of 2 x 2 and 1 x ½ – inch
  • Chalk line
  • Tape measure
  • Three long-sweep elbows of 1 x ½ – inch
  • PVC cement
  • Hole saw of 1 x 5/8 – inch

Steps for How to Vent A Kitchen Sink

Here is now a detailed guide with steps on venting a kitchen sink.

Step# 01 – Installing a Sanitary Tee

In the first step, you have to put the sanitary tee inside the sink’s drain line, so this means that the installation process will happen at the wall cavity of the kitchen where we have to get the drain line of the sink.

You can watch this video on installing a sanitary tee!

Step#02 – Insert the PVC Pipe

Take a tape measure and measure a 2-inch long pipe and then cut it with the help of a hacksaw. Now take a sweep elbow and fit it into the line. Make sure that the face of the pipe is direct to the wall and glued to the tube.

Step#03 – Draw a Line Beyond the Window

In this step, you have to check out the kitchen window above the sink and locate a point where the pipe is run vertically. Now snap the chalk-like into the moment, and the upper slope of the issue should be less than ¼ inch per foot.

Step#04 – Hole Drilling

Now takes a drill and makes a 15/8 inches hole in every stud point that will raise the vent and the elbow. Ensure that each hole is online and that an ideal spot can be used quickly.

Step#05 – Cut 1 ½ – inch Length Pipe

Now cut the pipe, which is1 ½ – an inch in Length Pipe, and reach the mounting point of the vent kitchen sink from the elbow.

Now insert this pipe in the hole you do in step 4; use the PVC cement for long-lasting use and glue it to the elbow. Then take another elbow and stick the pipe into the other side, ensuring that its outlet’s face is always upward.

Step#06 – Drill a Hole

In the last step for installing the kitchen sink pipe in the vent, use a drill to make a hole of 1 ⅝ inch. Now through this hole, extend the line to reach the attic. Connect it with the primary vent stack to run horizontally to the stick.

Why Is Venting Necessary?

If you try to empty a bottle quickly with a narrow mouth, it will gurgle, glug, and drain slowly. Now open a vent cap of any plastic gas container and let it flow smoothly. The vent hole allows the air to enter from the back of the liquid and produce a quick and glug-free flow. The vent stacks in the household plumbing work the same way.
